“When we connect to the land we get food, shelter and water. When we paint, it’s connection to family and land.” – Joanne O’Toole
Joanne O'Toole is an emerging Yankunytjatjara artist from Umoona Art Centre in Coober Pedy, who began painting in mid-2021.
She depicts her country through her work. Painting the Kapi Tjukula (rock holes) across the land and how they come together, connecting the country and its people. For Joanne, painting is connection and coming together.
Her use of bright colours across the canvas reminds her of the changes in landscape through different seasons and her memories over the years. Camping along the outskirts of Coober Pedy, going out bush, hunting, and swimming in waterholes and creeks as her dad showed her the countryside. All these beautiful memories and love of land is captured within each brush movement.
