Ngura - Country
Teresa Stevens’ use of strong colour and abstract imagery creates a contemporary interpretation of the vast, energetic, and vibrant landscape surrounding Fregon Community. The bold use of colour is influenced by the intense red of the desert country, creating a narrative based in the landscape.
Desert country near Fregon is a vibrant landscape with long ridges of low sandhills interspersed by flat spinifex and vast, grassy plains. These are criss-crossed by dry creeks lined with river red gum eucalypts, creating a patchwork effect that floods during heavy rain.
Teresa has been painting and living in Nyapari with Tjungu Palya for many years. She has recently returned to her birthplace of Fregon and is continuing her painting with Kaltjiti Arts.
Teresa’s father is Keith Stevens and her mother is Tjanpuwa Stevens, both established artists.
